About The Volunteen Program
Applications for the Onslow Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Volunteen Program are available for 14-18 year olds who are interested in serving as volunteers at Onslow Memorial Hospital. The goal of our Volunteen Program is to provide positive, energetic students (ages 14-18) who are possibly interested in healthcare or other real world experience with an opportunity to learn, help others, build friendships, and give back to the community. The program also provides assistance to departments that could use extra sets of hands.
Originally started as “Candy Stripers” in the 1940s, the program has morphed into the current Volunteen Program (or junior volunteers) who work under the supervision of the program coordinator and also Hospital and Auxiliary staffs. The “Candy Striper” name came from the traditional uniform that volunteers wore, that looked like peppermint candy, although this outfit isn't frequently worn today.
About 40 teens, boys and girls, will be selected to participate in the program and serve as “Ambassadors of Good Will” for the Hospital. They do this through a variety of Auxiliary services from working at the front desk, the gift shop or in other understaffed departments.
Our Pastoral Volunteer Committee recognizes the role spirituality plays in the lives of our patients and their families, especially during times of illness, uncertainty, or crisis. Our volunteer chaplains facilitate opportunities for healing through response to the spiritual needs of the patient and family, while also providing a spiritual presence and support for the patient care team and hospital staff.
What We Do
Join the Onslow Memorial Hospital Auxiliary today
The Auxiliary was founded in 1944 to support the work of Onslow Memorial Hospital. Today it is a group of over 70 caring members of the community who participate in activities such as fundraising, bringing cheer to hospital patients, providing help and encouragement to physicians and staff, and making scholarships available to young people interested in medical careers. We have volunteer opportunities for both adults and teens. Please use the tabs below to find out more about the opportunities best suited for you. Thank you for your interest.
In the Summer and periodically during the year, the adult Auxiliary is augmented by approximately 50 teen volunteers between 14 and 18 years of age. Students are awarded SAT hours for their service.
