Volunteer: Vigil VolunteerThe final hours of life should be filled with peace, not loneliness. Cardinal Hospice is looking for Vigil Volunteers to provide a comforting presence for hospice patients during their transition. Your Role: To provide a comforting presence at the patient's bedside. This can be done though conversation, stoic silence, reading aloud, playing soft music, praying, etc. How it works: The volunteer coordinator will reach out to you when Vigil is needed with a location. If you choose to accept that Vigil, you will meet your VC at the location of the patient as soon as your schedules allow. This volunteer role moves quickly when called upon, but calls can come weeks apart or mere days. Requirements: Volunteer application, orientation, and training. Clean Background Check. What you'll do: Visit patients, share stories, play board/card games, read aloud, watch tv together, make a new friend. Why it's important: Many hospice patients suffer from social isolation. Companionship volunteers help keep the loneliness at bay. They are their patient's champions against the darkness. How it works: Our Hospice Volunteer Coordinator will ask you questions about what you are and are not comfortable with and use those answers to select an appropriate patient for you. The first time you visit your assigned patient, your Volunteer Coordinator will go with you to help introduce you and support you as needed. Afterwards, should you choose to visit that patient again, you are free to visit on your own as often as you would like. Your visit allows a child, a spouse, or a friend to run an errand, take a nap, or just go and have some coffee, knowing that their loved one is not alone.
